Prosecutor Andrew Goldstein said Friday in court that Papadopoulos "deliberately and repeatedly lied to FBI agents pursuing a highly significant federal investigation", making a calculated decision "to advance his personal interests" to try to land a high-level administration post.
Papadopoulos, 31, was also fined US$9,500 and ordered to complete 200 hours of community service as well as 12 months of supervised release.
"My entire life has been turned upside down, I hope to have a second chance to redeem myself", he said. But he acknowledged that Papadopoulos was unsophisticated, naive and even a "fool" for having made contacts with Russian Federation intermediaries during the campaign.
He has testified that senior members of the Trump campaign encouraged him during 2016 to build ties with Russian Federation, including after he told them that Moscow possessed - and could be willing to share - dirt on Hillary Clinton, Trump's election rival.
In the following months, thousands of emails linked to the Clinton campaign were published by Wikileaks. During the campaign Papadopoulos told the president and now-Attorney General Jeff Sessions that Russia was interested in setting up a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"Judge said he believed Papadopoulos was genuinely remorseful but didn't agree to a probation sentence because he needed to send a message about the seriousness of lying to the FBI", Cheney wrote in a subsequent tweet. He recalled how he and attorney Robert Stanley and Papadopoulos visited the Federal Bureau of Investigation office in Chicago months ago and noticed the photos of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Trump hanging on the lobby wall. A spokeswoman for Sessions declined to comment after Papadopoulos' filing last week.

'Extraordinary' confession from White House official working against Donald Trump
News of the letter caught up with Pompeo in New Delhi, where he was traveling with US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis . Trump responded to the op-ed in a previously scheduled White House meeting with sheriffs from across the country.
According to the New York Times, George Papadopoulos played a key role in sparking the FBI's probe of Donald Trump's contacts with Russian Federation after he told a diplomat that Russian Federation had dirt on Hillary Clinton.
The envoy told U.S. investigators, shortly after the emails hacked from the Democratic Party were leaked.
The Russian outreach to Papadopoulos was part of a sweeping active measures campaign aimed at the United States that also included overtures toward other political operatives, cyberattacks, agitation on social media and more. He said his client doesn't recall telling anybody connected with the Trump campaign about Mifsud's offer of Clinton dirt.
But in a court filing last month, prosecutors said Papadopoulos ultimately did little to aid their work.
Partly as a result, they said, agents were unable to "effectively question" Misfud when he visited the United States two weeks later.
No connection between Mr Misfud and the hacked emails has been proven.
It referred to him as a key figure to have evaded the Mueller inquiry. Pinedo "made a mistake" but "had absolutely no knowledge" about who was buying the information or their motivations, his lawyer said.
