Reynolds, the star of countless action and comedy films over a career spanning almost half a century, passed away Thursday morning in Florida at the age of 82, his publicist, Jeffrey Lane, confirmed to CBSNews.
He was a fine athlete and played American football at Florida State University in the 1950s before his professional American football hopes were dashed by injuries suffered in a auto crash. Blake Edwards cast him in the lead of the American remake of The Man Who Loved Women in 1983. In 1977's Smokey and the Bandit, Jackie Gleason was Smokey the sheriff, Burt Reynolds was Bandit, and the plot hinged on whether Bandit and a truck-driving pal could blow through Smokey's roadblocks and make the run in 28 hours.
Reynolds was arguably the biggest star in the world in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and made more than 200 films during his 60-year career.
He won a Golden Globe in 1997 for his role as porn director Jack Horner in "Boogie Knights".
The prolific and iconic actor's career began on TV, starring in western shows such as Riverboat and Gunsmoke. And he had a hit TV show in the 1990s with "Evening Shade".
Born in southern Georgia, Reynolds and his family moved to MI and eventually to southeastern Florida, according to his profile on the website of the Florida Artist Hall of Fame, in which he was inducted in 1993.

He is also known to have owned several custom-made sports cars, 150 horses, and an impressive toupee collection valued at $100,000.
The Burt Reynolds Ranch was a sprawling 153-acre estate, which included a petting zoo which was used for filming scenes for Smokey and the Bandit.
Reynolds starred in many movies including "Deliverance", "Smokey and the Bandit" and "The Cannonball Run". "I didn't take the part that would be the most challenging", Reynolds said in an interview with CNN.
Even in his older years, Reynolds continued his work in both film and television.
Reynolds is most famously linked with Loni Anderson, an actress and former pageant queen, to whom he was married from 1988 through 1993.
