What were the protests about?
Kavanaugh topped a list of 25 potential nominees put together by the White House in conjunction with conservative groups such as the Federalist Society and the Heritage Foundation.
Others claimed the judge would let people with pre-existing medical conditions be stripped of medical coverage.
'This is a mockery and a travesty of justice, ' yelled one unidentified protester. Another cried: "Our democracy is broken!" As California Senator Dianne Feinstein pointed out in the hearing, given Kavanaugh's ruling in the only abortion case he has presided over, this fear is justified. Kavanaugh has produced more records to the committee than any other Supreme Court nominee in history, according to the chairman.
Harris opened the protest as soon as Judiciary Committee Chairman Grassley brought the hearing to order in line with a plan drawn up by Democrats over the weekend. Cory Booker and Kamala Harris led the charge, accusing the White House and the Republicans of hiding key details about Kavanaugh's time as a Bush-era White House lawyer by refusing to publicly release tens of thousands of documents. Although Senate Repulicans did ask for documents from Kavanaugh's time in the White House counsel, the Democrats weren't satisfied.
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, called Kavanaugh "unquestionably qualified", and said Democrats are "making a demand that they know is impossible to meet".
Female protesters dressed as handmaids from Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale lined the corridors outside the hearings, a costume choice they said alluded to Kavanaugh's "anti-abortion, anti-healthcare and anti-women" views. That court is believed to be the second most important court in the country, after the Supreme Court.

Roger Federer’s Shot Around Net At US Open Left Nick Kyrgios Speechless
Federer then bested the tricky Benoit Paire 7-5 6-4 6-4, in a performance that was more workman-like than it was clinical. But Federer came back to put the game at deuce when Kyrgios hit one into the net.
But Republican Senator Orrin Hatch dismissed the concerns raised about the judge as "ridiculous".
Members from both sides of the aisle will have an opportunity to debate the confirmation of Kavanaugh, as well as question Kavanaugh himself.
Why is the nomination contentious?
The nine-justice court has until now been balanced between conservatives and liberals, with Anthony Kennedy considered the "swing vote".
The Senate is likely to vote on confirmation by the end of September. There were no signs of Republican defections. He also accused GOP lawmakers of "rushing" Kavanaugh's nomination with an "unprecedented level of secrecy", citing the withheld documents from his tenure in the Bush administration. This is horribly embarrassing for Brett Kavanaugh - the man the Republican Party is hoping will be our next Supreme Court Justice.
A resident of the wealthy Washington suburb of Chevy Chase, Mr Kavanaugh studied law at Yale.
"During your time in the White House, when you were staff secretary - some people regard it as kind of a monitor, monitoring things going in and going out".
