Boston City Council member Ayana Pressley (D) has knocked off 10-term Rep. Michael Capuano (D-MA), the latest progressive insurgent to topple an establishment favorite in a primary this election cycle.
But she made her background a major part of the race, highlighting the importance of boosting diversity in the Democratic Party, talking about her own experience with sexual assault, and regularly calling for more "bold, activist leadership".
Pressley cried tears of joy after receiving the news of her win.
And unlike Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political neophyte, the 44-year-old Pressley has a track record in Massachusetts' halls of power.
"We won? we won?" she repeats as she looks around the room. Ocasio-Cortez endorsed Pressley shortly after her win. I don't blame them. "This is the way life goes", he said.
She was raised by her single mother, Sandra Pressley, on the north side of Chicago while her father, Martin Pressley, battled addiction and spent much of her childhood in prison. She and Ocasio-Cortez both defeated older, white congressmen who were reliable liberal votes, but who didn't look like many voters in their districts. "Oh my god. Oh my god", Pressley said through tears. "And a reliable vote is not good enough".

The caning of two women in Malaysia for attempting to have sex has been condemned as "inhuman and degrading". A few weeks ago, authorities removed the portraits of two LGBT rights activists from a public exhibition.
Roger Federer’s Shot Around Net At US Open Left Nick Kyrgios Speechless
Federer then bested the tricky Benoit Paire 7-5 6-4 6-4, in a performance that was more workman-like than it was clinical. But Federer came back to put the game at deuce when Kyrgios hit one into the net.

There is no Republican challenger in the November general election.
Democratic U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren sailed through her primary unopposed. "She will serve the district well in Congress". She was the first black woman elected to the Boston City Council in 2009. Neal, the dean of the state's House delegation, first was elected in 1989.
Rep. William Keating easily fended off a challenge from his left in his bid for a fifth term.
An African-American woman pulled off an upset victory in a Democratic primary contest against a 10-term entrenched male incumbent in Boston, the latest sign that insurgent United States candidates from the left are gaining ground.
Republican Gov. Charlie Baker won his party's nomination for a second term, defeating Scott Lively, a conservative minister and staunch supporter of Trump who frequently called Baker - a frequent critic of the president - a RINO, or Republican in Name Only. And black politicians in three states - Florida, Georgia and Maryland - have won the Democratic nomination for governor, a historic turn for a country that has elected just two black governors in US history. Both contended that Baker's support among voters was soft and that his administration had failed to make significant strides in many areas, particularly the problems plaguing the Boston-area transit system known as the "T".
