Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, Gov. Tom Wolf (D), and the Pennsylvania State Police filed a lawsuit to prevent Defense Distributed from distributing plans for its 3D printed gun in that state.
The controversy centers on Defense Distributed, a firm that began publishing gun designs in 2013, but was told to stop soon thereafter by the US State Department.
People can use the plans to manufacture a hard-to-trace plastic gun using a 3D printer. Ferguson asked in a statement Monday. However, even coarsely plastic 3D-printed firearms, sometimes combined with other more easily manufactured or purchased elements, can produce weapons likely to harm the shooter that are capable of firing a projectile at least once.
The new lawsuit against the State Department was filed in Seattle, Wash., federal court by Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson, along with New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.
Defense Distributed touts itself as the only such gun-technology business in the United States authorized by the federal government to publish those blueprints in the form of design data for the 3-D printers. Once these untraceable guns are on our streets and in our schools, we can never get them back.
Wilson took the plans down but then sued the federal government in 2015, arguing that the policy was infringing on his right to free speech and bear arms.
Separately, 21 state attorneys general sent a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday, saying that the State Department's decision was "deeply unsafe and could have an unprecedented impact on public safety".

"Just goosed Brady, Gabby and Mike Bloomberg in federal court". Pennsylvania had also sued Defense Distributed Sunday, resulting in an emergency hearing in which the company agreed to temporarily block Pennsylvania Internet users from its website.
Its files include 3-D printable blueprints for a plastic AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifle, a version of a weapon that has been used in many USA mass shootings, as well as other firearms.
