Two days later, Optus has chose to not only refund subscribers, but also air the the World Cup free and share those rights with SBS, at least for some time.
All World Cup 2018 matches for the remainder of the group stages will be broadcast on SBS as well as streaming service Optus, with the latter service also made free to all Australians until August 31.
Last night Optus announced it would simulcast 48 hours of matches with SBS after viewers encountered connection issues and drop outs during games over the weekend.
Optus chief executive Alan Lew said that the Optus Sport streaming platform had not experienced further problems during the past two days when games were simulcast on SBS, which "had provided us with the confidence needed to reassure the Australian public that we've got this".
"Since Monday, Optus has delivered the last six matches without issue", said Lew.
Having already received numerous complaints from disgruntled soccer fans, Optus has extended an olive branch to its customers, announcing that it will provide a free Fetch TV Mini set-top box for 12 months to every Optus Sport Premium subscriber who's had streaming performance issues between June 14 and June 18.
The issues, which have been coined #Floptus, have delivered a significant blow to the company's brand reputation with many predicting it will take time to rebuild trust.
