Cabanas said that the dead included a civil protection official. However, officials fear both the number of deaths and injured will rise with so many people still unaccounted for.
In Guatemala City, La Aurora airport has been closed due to ash.
At least 99 people have been killed following eruptions at a volcano southwest of Guatemala's capital.
The eruption forced the Guatemala City's La Aurora worldwide airport to shut down its only runway due to the presence of volcanic ash and to guarantee passenger and aircraft safety, Guatemala's civil aviation authority said in a Tweet.
Hundreds of rescue workers were helping survivors and recovering bodies from the lava, while some areas were inaccessible as roads were cut off by the flow. The Volcano of Fire has erupted on and off for centuries, according to the USGS, and this is its second eruption this year.
"It's a river of lava that overflowed its banks and affected the Rodeo village".
The volcano erupted Sunday, burying people in ash and searing mud that raced down its flanks.
