Mudslides and flooding crippled the North Carolina mountains and foothills Tuesday night, blocking roads, closing schools and prompting temporary evacuations around a dam that was believed in danger of collapse. One photo posted by the city of Charlottesville showed a playground partially submerged by floodwaters. Some people were able to move their campers and RVs to higher ground and park them at nearby parking lots, such as at the flea market.
The big, messy storm caused more than 25,000 power outages in Alabama on Tuesday, a day after making landfall on the Florida Panhandle.
