Watch the reaction video above. Outfit the hulking former WWE star in a pair of cargo trousers and a snug henley tee, and throw him into any extreme situation - jungle-based video game, diesel-fueled auto stuntery, beach crimes, fighting an quake, starring across Kevin Hart - and it just works.
And it is exactly how these big, thick destruction films should be done: the script is boisterously amusing, the action sequences have real flair and sweep, and the central human-primate friendship is even quite moving at points. Naturally, there's a tower on top for King George Kong to swing on.
Godzilla was caused by radiation, and in some sequels he was the lesser of two evils when another monster showed up. It's not a plus for Rampage when a CG gorilla is its most appealing character. It's still mutated monsters running wild. That's part of what makes it a ideal vehicle for Dwayne Johnson's particular brand of action hero, and Peyton's particular brand of spectacle destruction. The pathogens get loose in the world, infecting a gator in Florida, a wolf in the Rockies, and a gorilla at the San Diego zoo where Davis Okoye (Johnson) supervises the animals. On one of his African enforcement patrols, Davis rescued juvenile albino gorilla George after poachers killed his mother.
The only goal this character trait serves is so that his young male fans won't go, "Ew, girls". As a stupefyingly silly throwback monster movie, "Rampage" romps, but as a Johnson vehicle, sadly, it flops. Won't this alienate them?
Canisters of a serum engineered by Energyne Industries, controlled by scheming minx Claire Wyden (Malin Akerman) and her goofy brother Brett (Jake Lacy), fall to Earth from the exploding Athena-1 space station laboratory.George is infected and the normally mild-mannered ape develops heightened aggression as he rapidly increases in size. Why was this experiment in space???? Akerman is deliciously evil as the villain here and plays her part well. They laugh, joke and make crude wisecracks, all in sign, but one morning Davis discovers that George is growing at a frightening pace and developing a violent temper.
Note to screenwriters: you do not need a new reason that bad guys are making genetic weapons.
Okoye is joined by Dr. Kate Caldwell (Naomie Harris), a brilliant ex-Energyne employee and Agent Russell (Jeffery Dean Morgan), a drawling good ol' boy federal agent as they try to cure George and stop Energyne from getting away with it all. Johnson, who usually dwarfs his co-stars, this time gets to feel small. Okoye tags along, as does a scientist (Naomie Harris) who thinks she can help. And it was the best video game movie ever made - certainly the best since Silent Hill 12 years ago and Mortal Kombat 23 years ago.
Ralph is off his leash. They require no mental exertions or self-examination, which is just as well, because the movie does not encourage cerebral activity. The kind of character who spouts pithy lines like, "when science shits the bed, I'm the one they call to change the sheets", with a smile on his face, Morgan's Russell is a definite victor in a film that already has a lot going for it.

Number, severity of brain injuries raises dementia risk
TBI occurs when an external force such as a bump or blow to the head disrupts the normal function of the brain. Over 36 years, 132,093 individuals (4.7%) had at least one TBI diagnosis, most (85%) were mild in severity.
The action set pieces establish the geography of each scene, especially on a plane.
I am always impressed with motion capture and the actors who portray various creatures and Liles does a terrific job of emoting through facial expressions.
Review: At some point during "Rampage" you are going to find yourself confronted with a choice. Seeds are planted early on so that this manipulation works, but for all the exposition thrown our way, none of this matters as we're invested in the narrative and the characters pretty much from the get go.
If Rampage's disaster scenario represents classic B-movie material, the filmmakers don't seem at all concerned about appearances; in fact they up the ante with another enormous predator, a 30-foot wolf with incredible speed and agility that's on a potentially devastating collision course with George.
Lizzie looks more like an iguana than the lizard from the game or the crocodile she's actually supposed to be.
This unforeseen level of emotional maturity, coupled with Rampage's willingness to hew a bit darker in tone, helps to elevate the action Peyton has constructed here. These blockbuster action beats are not just huge showcases of very impressive CGI wizardry - thankfully all shot and staged comprehensively - but also edge-of-your seat stuff as they continuously ramp up in intensity. That's what the fans want so give it to them.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan among others, and it is out this week.
I guess I just don't see why to make it Rampage if it's a generic monster movie. He is, in fact, dwarfed by George, and every other hammy performance on screen, his presence shockingly overshadowed, his usually radioactive charisma dimmed.
