Chance of being mass-produced: Done deal.
How much of this will make it from concept to production remains to be seen.
The Volkswagen Company has showcased its Atlas Cross Sport at the New York Auto Show. Further, it's on a platform that is built here (which helps VW avoid Chicken Tax complications and any forthcoming Trump administration tariffs) and will not require any special hoop-jumping for parts and service considerations. And, back in the 1980s it had an El Camino-like model, based on the original VW Rabbit, on sale in the U.S. But that pint-sized, underpowered model didn't last long and few cared as it slipped into oblivion. With its hybrid drive and a coupé-like rear body design, the five-seat, near-production Atlas Cross Sport was developed for use in metropolitan areas like NY or San Francisco. It's a smaller five-seat version of the seven-seat Atlas, which was one of our favorite cars a year ago.

The production version is planned for various markets around the world, most notably China and the US, where the five-seat second Atlas model will be built at Volkswagen's Chattanooga plant in Tennessee. The Atlas Sport Cross is a two-row, five-passenger SUV, which has the same wheelbase as the standard model as they share the MQB modular platform. The result is still an imposing Atlas in the front paired with a short and sporty overhang in the rear.
And it would seemingly fit into the German automaker's strategy, shown by the arrival of the Atlas which was very specifically designed with the American market as its top priority.
The streamlined body of this vehicle is linked with a sloping D-pillar and roofline spoiler. Instead, it's unveiling is meant to "gauge the reactions of buyers and media", according to the company's announcement.
The grille and VW badge are luminated by white light and offer an animated lighting display when the auto is unlocked with light running over the grille and into the LED headlight surrounds, while the badge gradually gets brighter. The Atlas Tanoak has a more rugged appearance to match its off-road capabilities with a raised bonnet and rugged underbody protection, which houses a centrally mounted winch and carabiner.
Inside, there's a 10.1-inch central touchscreen with proximity sensors and gesture control, integrated into the horizontal-themed dashboard. The navigation system includes a new three-dimensional view in which the user can set up multiple layers with different information in each view.
In the looks department, the Cross Sport concept features a two-bar grille rather than the three-bar grille of the current Atlas, and the grille crossbars are illuminated to as LED Daytime Running Lights. The active LED lighting features are replicated at the rear. The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and 4Motion all-wheel drive.
