Zuckerberg said in a post on Facebook that the changes would be "major" and lead to a short-term drop in the time spent on the network. Instead, the social media site will give you posts that your family and friends have interacted with. Facebook says its research shows that users are exposed to more divergent views on its platform than they would be otherwise, but that's hard to verify independently since the company is cautious about providing data to outsiders.
The move will likely cut off traffic to many news sites that rely on Facebook users to stay alive.
Mark Zuckerberg's latest Facebook post is proving expensive. Connecting with dear ones can make users feel better and less lonely, adds the CEO, and this, in turn, contributes to long-term happiness. That score determines where it places the post in your News Feed, and how far down you have to scroll to see it. The news feed ranking update, which is set to roll out globally in the coming weeks, is expected to support that goal.
This means Facebook's more than 2 billion monthly users can expect to see more from their family members and friends. Maybe he'll prove us wrong with this change, but for now, we're going to flag this as fake news.
We started making changes in this direction a year ago, but it will take months for this new focus to make its way through all our products.
There are many tight-knit communities around TV shows and sports teams. And if we do the right thing, I believe that will be good for our community and our business over the long term too. But businesses that use Facebook to connect with their customers without paying for ads will also feel the pain.
One of our big focus areas for 2018 is making sure the time we all spend on Facebook is time well spent. We built...
