The aptly titled Vive Wireless Adaptor uses Intel WiGig technology and runs on the 60 Ghz band, which HTC describes as "interference-free" and will, as a result, provide "lower latency and better performance". HTC hasn't yet mentioned increased PC-spec requirements for this newer, higher-res Vive, however, nor about whether the Vive Pro will use any resolution-smoothing tricks for weaker PCs.
This week at the Consumer Electronics Show, the company announced the Vive Pro, a lighter-weight unit with integrated audio and a resolution increase to 2880 x 1600.
What's more, the Pro has a new headstrap, dual microphones with active noise cancellation, and two front-facing cameras "designed to empower developer creativity".
HTC has not announced pricing and availability for either device, but the Vive Pro is expected in Q1 while the wireless adaptor is coming around the "summer".
The new headset will also come with integrated headphones, and is created to be lighter and more comfortable than the existing Vive headset.
The HTC Vive Pro will also incorporate speakers similarly to the way they are implemented in headsets from competitor Oculus Rift. "This is a product for these most discerning customers", said Dan O'Brien, US GM of HTC Vive.
