On Dec. 16, 2017 Canadian Blood Services put out a call for more blood donors over the holiday season, saying 35,000 open appointments needed to be filled across Canada before January 6, 2018.
Mike Stredder, director of blood donation at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: "It's New Year and like many of us, you may be thinking about the year ahead and some changes you'd like to make to your life".
Platelets are also collected but this poses a hard challenge because such donations only have a shelf life of seven days, notes the Canadian Blood Services.
Christmas may be over but it's still a season to give.
All blood types can help patients, but Canadian Blood Services says O-negative is in particular demand as the universal blood type is compatible with everyone.
United Blood Services strives to keep a five-day supply of every blood type at all times.

Typically the holidays are a slower time for blood donations. Patients with serious bleeding or those undergoing cancer treatments rely on platelet donations, but with a shelf life of only seven days, the need for platelets is pressing and ongoing. It is important to ensure blood is available before it is needed.
