Mumbaikars enjoy first AC local train ride on Christmas

It is a Christmas gift for Mumbaikers as the city gets the first ever air- conditioned suburban train on Monday. Of these, eight will run as fast local trains between Churchgate and Virar, stopping only at major stations, which are Mumbai Central, Dadar, Bandra, Andheri, Borivali, Bhayander and Vasai Road. The services of AC local train will replace existing 12 Non AC services.
The coaches will carry approximately 6,000 commuters per rake.
Senior RPF officials confirmed that an RPF official will be posted inside each coach of the AC local train. "We are expecting some new surprises in the coming year". The train will run five days a week with no service on weekends. For the first week, the authorities will run the train for only six times every day between Churchgate and Borivli stations. The minimum fare will be Rs 60 and the maximum Rs 220.
However as an introductory offer for a period of initial six months, the base fare of single journey of AC EMU shall be charged 1.2 times, the statement said. In its first week, the Mumbai AC local, will ferry passengers from Churchgate to Borivali, and from Churchgate to Virar from next week onwards.

Railway activists too expressed happiness at the launch of the AC train.
The monthly pass will cost between Rs 570 and Rs 820 (till Bandra) to Rs 1,240 (till Andheri) to Rs 1,640 (till Borivali), and Rs 2,040 till Virar. "Remaining personnel will be posted at each railway stations to ensure that commuters board the train without any hurdle", said an RPF official. Besides a monthly season ticket, the AC train will also have weekly and fortnightly season tickets.
Safety measures: Each coach is provided with a passenger alarm indication lights on both sides, which are integrated with alarm chain pulling system.
