Microsoft today is starting the new Party Chat Beta through the Xbox Beta app for Android and iOS users. You can sign-up for the iOS Xbox beta app here. Microsoft typically brings beta features to its main Xbox apps within a few months, so it should be available to both the regular iOS and Android apps shortly. However, this feature will only be possible for those games which are available on all the above-mentioned platforms and support cross-platform play.
If for some reason you must put down the headset and walk away from your Xbox console, you no longer have to leave your party chat hanging.
This should, theoretically, also work when you're playing an Xbox One game but want to use external speakers for game sound and your phone for chat audio, though admittedly it would be an unintuitive way of doing things.
Though the app is still in beta phase, it sure seems promising and will open up several possibilities for keeping in touch while gaming with your buddies.
Update: We are now being told this is a separate app that you need to download through the Windows Store.
Microsoft has not officially announced this new feature, but it's safe to say it should be releasing for everyone eventually seeing as people have spotted it on the app's page.
