Conyers, has admitted to paying a settlement to a former staffer but denies her sexual harassment allegations.
Speaking on the Mildred Gaddis radio show, Conyers said he's taking the allegations "in stride".
"I think an ethics investigation will vindicate him", said Charles Williams, with Solomon Baptist Church.
Conyers' attorney, Arnold Reed, confirmed that the lawmaker meant retiring effective immediately.
Conyers, the longest serving member of the House of Representatives, will announce on Tuesday he does not plan to run for re-election, USA media said following accusations of sexual harassment against the Michigan Democrat. Another woman alleges she was sacked by Conyers after she rejected his advances and subsequently settled a wrongful dismissal claim with the congressman. A few days later, she finally stated she believed Conyers should resign.
She also said that she saw Conyers touching and stroking the legs and buttocks of Brown and other female staffers on "multiple occasions".
"It is apparent that if we're going to raise this unholy and unlawful guillotine, calling for the head of John Conyers, then in fairness we must begin with the president of the United States". She said he asked her to read his statement announcing his decision and that he's notified House Speaker Paul Ryan, Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Michigan Governor Rick Snyder of his plans to step down.

He said he's endorsing his son, John Conyers III, to replace him in Congress. Conyers faced calls to resign following reports that he reached a $27,000 settlement with a former aide who said she was sacked for rejecting his sexual advances.
Melanie Sloan, a former Conyers aide and Washington lawyer, told The Washington Post last week that Conyers harassed and verbally abused her when she worked for his Washington office in the 1990s.
Conyers, 88, was hospitalized last week for a stress-related illness after returning home from Washington, D.C. He is the longest-serving member in the House.
The revelations against Conyers came amid a flurry of allegations of sexual misconduct against several of his colleagues in both the House and Senate, including Reps. In one instance he appeared to mock all the women who have used the #MeToo hashtag to share their stories of assault, harassment, or rape. Joe Barton, R-Texas, Blake Farenthold, R-Texas, and Sen.
"I think there should be a complete disclosure and revealing to all the citizens in the country what federal legislatures are doing or not doing - and any cost that may have incurred as a result of that", Conyers said.
Word of Conyers' resignation was met with sadness among House Democrats, even though many had called on him to step down.
