The largest US automaker's plan for a self-driving car-sharing service comes at a time when auto sales in its home market are slowing after a record seven-year streak of gains.
It is now unclear how GM's ride-hailing service will compete with industry rivals like Uber, or how exactly GM will market its services. The automaker invested $500 million in Lyft past year, but Lyft seems to have grown closer to Waymo and GM rival Ford recently. By getting out there first, GM hopes to ride a rapid cost and technology improvement curve that will leave the competition far behind....
"General Motors' executives clearly showed their sense of urgency to lead the autonomous vehicle market as it laid out its plans to analysts - plans that include self-driving cars for a ride-sharing service by 2019", Michelle Krebs, executive analyst for Autotrader, said in an emailed statement.
Its Cruise Automation unit is testing autonomous Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicles with human backup drivers in San Francisco, Detroit and Phoenix, and has plans to test in Manhattan next year.
GM said it is important to be first to get the self-driving electric vehicles on the road to allow quick improvement of driver experience to give the company a competitive advantage.
