Security personnel and Arlington police were following William Paul Dodd, 21, about 4:20 p.m. Sunday after he stole two pairs of Ray-Ban's from the Sunglass Hut in The Parks at Arlington mall, police Lt. Christopher Cook said.
A suspected shoplifter was shot by a police officer at an Arlington mall after allegedly reaching for a replica handgun. Cook said if police can arrest the suspect on a later date, they prefer not to put the driving public at risk.
Despite initial reports on social media, the incident was not an active shooter situation, police said. He said the responding officer was able to identify the registration on the vehicle and a higher-ranking officer made a decision to cancel the pursuit.
"I know Arlington is looking for me, but I got a gun so if you pull me over I'm going to shoot so just be ready", the man said during the call.

Cook said the police are working with the District Attorney's office to file the appropriate charges against Dodd. He warned the dispatcher that he had a gun and would shoot at police if they tried to pursue him. Arlington PD later clarified the officer was on-duty as part of its South Retail District Unit.
