LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech Athletics registered its highest Graduation Success Rate in school history during the 2016-17 academic year according to data released Wednesday by the NCAA. The GSR subtracts student-athletes who depart for allowable exclusions (e.g. official church mission), as well as those who transfer but would have been academically eligible to compete had they returned to the institution. This data measures the percentage of student-athletes who entered college on institutional aid (whether athletics-based aid or otherwise) between those years and graduated within six years.
The federal graduation rate for all Division I athletes this year was 68 percent, compared to 66 percent for all students at colleges and universities that play Division I sports.
"The success that our student-athletes are seeing in the classroom is a testament to the type of student-athletes our coaches are recruiting", director of athletics Tim Leonard said in a statement.
Eleven teams (baseball, men's basketball, football, golf, men's skiing, men's tennis, women's basketball, cross country/track, gymnastics, women's tennis and volleyball) exceeded the overall Division I GSR for their sport. Five public universities - South Carolina, Missouri, LSU, Mississippi State and Alabama - graduated at least 90 percent of their athletes. Tech has posted an all-time best GSR each year since 2013.
The men's basketball GSR for the time period measured was 67 percent. Men's basketball federal rate was a 42-point improvement over the federal rate of 33 while women's basketball improved on the federal rate of 47 by 43 points.
